Male plastic surgery on the rise

Male plastic surgery on the rise

May 28, 2020

The era where plastic surgery was reserved for ‘women only’ has vanished, together with the stigma that surrounded male plastic and cosmetic surgery for decades.

According to the American Society of Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), male plastic surgery witnessed an increase of 30% in the last decade. Women still form the majority opting for cosmetic surgery, but men are catching up quickly. Dr Sean Moodley has experienced this fast incline in male plastic surgery first hand at his practice, with male patients growing from 10% to 50% over the last years in private practice.

Why are more men having plastic surgery?

Various reasons could be fuelling the rise in male plastic surgery. Today we live in a world where many of us have our lives on display via social media, we see the perfect lives of others, we are exposed to the ‘filtered’ looks of selfies and the quest for perfection. As a result we often end up comparing ourselves with the look and lives of others and have become more self-conscious and critical. Men are also paying more attention to their overall appearance and skin care routine and in some cases, have turned to cosmetic procedures for help. Just like women, men often want to change the things they don’t like when they look in the mirror.

Dr Sean Moodley knows that the male body and face shape is characteristically different to that of women and therefore not all cosmetic surgery procedures available to women are recommended for men. Dr  Moodley tailor’s  individualized treatment plans and procedures which are specific to each patient’s anatomy and desired results.

What men want

Male patients turn to Dr Moodley to discuss aesthetical and health related issues and will often opt for both surgical as well as non-invasive treatments, with some procedures being more common than others. So, what are some of the most popular procedures that men want?

  1. Botox and fillers

Most men love the results achieved with the use of Botox ( aptly called ‘Brotox’[1]) and fillers. Male facial muscles are larger than their female counterparts, which leads to deeper expression lines. Hence men tend to need a lot more Botox to achieve the desired result. Men’s skin age better thanks to its thickness, blood flow and numerous accessory glands. But men are not immune to the visible signs of ageing.

  1. Liposuction and body contouring

Many men aspire to a sculpted physique. Unfortunately for many, this can’t be achieved by spending numerous hours in the gym or on a rigorous diet. Their body blueprint just doesn’t allow for it naturally.  Liposuction and non-invasive body sculpting techniques such as BodyTite are very popular with men; leaving them feeling younger and more toned.

  1. Blepharoplasty – eyelid surgery

Blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery, has become one of the most popular surgeries requested by men. Blepharoplasty has many benefits such as looking younger and more refreshed, minimal scarring and it requires little recovery time.  An upper blepharoplasty is a quick procedure and can be done in the doctor’s rooms.

  1. Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty helps men look better and feel more confident by changing the size and shape of their nose, while removing bumps and filling in depressions if need be. Of course, not every guy going for a nose job is having the work done strictly for cosmetic reasons. Many men with broken noses or breathing problems resulting from a deviated septum will also benefit from rhinoplasty.

  1. Neck and jawline contouring and lift

Neck and jawline contouring can be performed through the use of various techniques such as, a surgical neck lift (lower rhytidectomy – traditional / limited), FaceTite or Threads. Depending on the patient’s needs Dr Moodley will create a specific and tailored treatment plan for his patient.

  1. Chin implants[2]

Chin enhancement surgery, referred to as chin augmentation, is typically performed to harmonize the mid and lower face.  This is usually achieved by restoring the golden ratio of the face.

  1. Hair restoration – PRP and stem cell therapy

Hair loss is a very common condition for both men and women. The most common type is androgenetic alopecia. Dr Sean Moodley has various treatment combinations available to counter this problem which include:

  • Dietary supplementation,
  • Topical agents,
  • PRP with Biotin,
  • Stem cell therapy
  • Amino-peptide hair filler.
  1. Regenerative treatments – IV and stem cell

Our general wellbeing and health has increasingly become more important as we are all on the quest to discover the ‘Fountain of Youth’. IV vitamin therapy, NAD+ IV therapy and the ‘diamond treatment’ stem cell therapy can improve our quality of life and longevity. Most men will add these treatments to other procedures they are having done.

For Men Only

Apart from the above mentioned treatment options, Dr Sean Moodley has observed that some of his male patients struggle to get the desired results through exercise and diet alone. The body doesn’t always want to change in the desired places.  Based on this observation, there are three ‘Men Only Treatments’, offered by Dr Moodley, namely, gynaecomastia, pectoral augmentation and calf augmentation.

  1. Gynaecomastia – male breast reduction

Gynaecomastia is the result of a hormonal imbalance that ultimately grows and feminizes male breasts. Gynaecomastia involves the removal of swollen male breast tissue, also known more colloquially as “man boobs.” During the procedure, Dr Sean Moodley removes excess breast tissue through excision and liposuction. The size or position of the areola, which can become stretched with significant muscle or weight gain, can also be addressed.

2.  Pectoral augmentation – 3. Calf implants

Pectoral augmentation and calf implants are in demand and Dr Moodley has performed several of these procedures. For pectoral and calf augmentation a soft silicone implant is used, made to the individualised specs of the patients. Both procedures are done under general anaesthesia and leave very little scars.

The results of cosmetic procedures can be so rewarding for both patient as well as the doctor and in next week’s blog we discuss the Men Only Treatments more in depth.

Keeping it real

Most men like to keep things real and simple. Looking natural, well rested and presenting a more appealing version of themselves, pretty much sums up their overall demands.

Dr Moodley adheres to the ‘au naturelle’ philosophy and is therefore very well equipped and skilled to fulfil the demands of his male patients. Should you wish to find out more or discuss any of the treatment options, contact Dr Moodley as he will happily and expertly assist.
