Dr Sean Moodley unpacks common cosmetic and plastic surgery buzzwords

Apr 7, 2020

The world of reconstructive and plastic surgery continues to evolve. This is exceptionally relevant when looking at how the world of aesthetics, ageing and beauty have transformed. Alongside this transformation has been the progression of various cosmetic and plastic surgery terms and phrases. Phrases like “getting my face plumped” or Fillers and Botox continue to dominate surgical discussions. I find these phrases being adopted and hyped by the media and later finding their way into my consultation room. But what do these words mean?

As a medical practitioner, I wholeheartedly believe in a holistic approach, where beauty and health go hand in hand. At its most fundamental and basic level, however, this means ensuring that my patients fully understand the intricacies of my procedures and what they are asking for.

I find it increasingly concerning to find individuals misusing various surgical terms. Without prior knowledge of the correct procedural terminology, you put yourself at a disadvantage. I will, therefore, be unravelling common cosmetic and surgical buzzwords that areused by the media and the general public. This will ensure that you know exactly what each procedure and/or treatment truly is. Including what it subsequently entails and what exactly you’re asking for.

Plastic surgery buzzword 1: Boob jobs

The correct surgical term for a “boob job” is a breast augmentation or augmentation mammoplasty. This procedure involves either fat transfers or the insertion of breast implants. This procedure will increase both the shape and size of your breasts.

Prior to undergoing a breast augmentation, I will do a thorough assessment based on the characteristics of your breast and chest wall. We will then mutually agree on the best means of achieving your desired breast symmetry, size and/or shape. My practice uses breast implants provided by Motiva and Mentor.

Plastic surgery buzzword 2: Nose job

The surgical name for this procedure is a Rhinoplasty. Primary rhinoplasties are ideal for individuals looking to enhance their nasal features. This plastic surgery technique intricately eliminates several issues. This includes breathing difficulties, boosting aesthetic improvements, creating facial symmetry and correcting birth defects.

Revision rhinoplasty, also referred to as secondary rhinoplasty is a corrective procedure. This addresses unwanted results following a primary nose job.

As an experienced medical practitioner, I ensure that a comprehensive examination is had with my patient about the most suitable rhinoplasty option.

What many don’t know is that a ‘nose job’ doesn’t always have to be a major surgical procedure as portrayed in the media. There are quick, reversible non-surgical alternatives to achieve your desired result.

Cosmetic surgery buzzword 3: Fillers

Dermal Fillers are a popular cosmetic treatment for numerous reasons. Fillers are a type of hyaluronic acid injectable that is highly favoured by most surgeons. It is favoured for its ability to moisturise, plump and hydrate. This results in restored fullness and volume in the face.

The gel-like substance is injected beneath the skin; either in the creases, folds, or lines of the face. This includes my patient’s lips, near the eyes, cheeks and forehead to name a few. My practice readily uses the Dermal Fillers provided by Juvéderm, Restylane and Teosyal.

It is, however, important to note that this is a temporary treatment for facial ageing. In order to achieve long-term results and maintain your desired look, you will need to book several treatments.

Cosmetic surgery buzzword 4: Botox ®

Botulinum toxin, commonly referred to as Botox ®, is a purified substance derived from bacteria. This injectable protein reduces muscle activity by inhibiting signals that are sent to it. This ultimately removes facial wrinkles. In my experience, I have found that on average, the results last approximately four months, but this also varies from patient to patient.

I am a firm believer in the positive effects Botox ® has on my patients’ overall wellbeing and continue to advocate for its ability to emphasise their natural youthfulness.

You can use Botox ® and Fillers in combination with one another. This, however, doesn’t mean that they are synonymous just because they are both injectables. Botox freezes muscle activity. Fillers plump up soft tissues of the face.

Cosmetic surgery buzzword 5: Eye wrinkles

The correct medical term for the wrinkles found on the outer corners of the eyes is Crows Feet. These static wrinkles deepen with age, due to a loss of elasticity.

I often prescribe a combination of Botox®  and Dermal Fillers to my patients to correct the severity of these lines. In my experience, I have found these skin tightening forms to be the best options for this delicate area of skin. My patient and I will, however, choose the most effective form of correction based on my observations.

Plastic surgery buzzword 6: Lipo

Liposuction otherwise abbreviated as ‘lipo’ is a suction procedure that involves contouring the body to the exact specifications of the patient. We perform this procedure under local anaesthesia. I will then insert Cannulas, small narrow tubes to remove fat from the body. Common areas include the buttocks, thighs, hips and arms.

My practice makes use of the S.A.F.E liposuction technique. This is a three-phase procedure that includes the use of separation, aspiration or suction and the equalization of remaining fat tissue for optimal results. I am not only highly proficient in this renowned technique but have seen many of my patients rely on this procedure for their desired look.

Ensuring that you fully understand the medical terms associated with your intended procedure – and how to differentiate them from other often confused procedures, is critical. Not only will this help you understand what your specific treatment entails but help you better navigate the world of cosmetic, reconstructive and plastic surgery.
